Population Biology and Behavioral Ecology is very interested in being active within the local community and mentoring students during the beginning of their scientific career. Here are some of the ways we are currently involved in outreach and education:

Outreach & Education

"Dr. Greg" skyped with Ms. Bailey's sixth grade class from Immaculate Conception School in Marlborough, MA last week. After learning about oceanography, each student completed a research project on a marine organism of their choice. The students then talked to Greg about their interest in various careers in marine biology, and loved asking him about the different types of organisms that he works on. Greg loved meeting Ms. Bailey's class and definitely looks forward to chatting with them again!

Ashley Taylor is our most recent graduate from the Link Internship. Over the summer, she focussed on refining her molecular genetic laboratory skills and presented incredible findings during her seminar talk titled, "Lack of Genetic Diversity in the Major Histocompatibility Complex: DQA Exon 2 of Beluga Whales (Delphinapterus leucas)".

Jorge Monroy is an undergraduate at IRSC. He has volunteered with Population Bioloy and Behavioral Ecology for the last three years,  acquiring molecular techniques, such as: DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and tissue and total DNA storage. He is also learning about daily lab life, such as making reagents, re-stocking and ordering supplies, and washing dishes. Next semester, he plans on continuing his molecular education by learning how to sequence mitochondrial DNA and take the lead on a pilot project.

Population Biology and Behavioral Ecology annually judges the Beachland Elementary Science Fair, interviewing the finalists and determining which projects advance to regionals.
